Grow a California classic. The boysenberry was developed and popularized by Walter Knott near Anaheim in the 1920s and 1930s. It produces large, juicy berries with a sweet-tart flavor, deep purple when ripe, and it’s one of the best berries for jams, pies, and eating fresh.

Boysenberries are self-fruitful, so one plant is enough. They have an early harvest, and in warm climates like Southern California the berries can ripen as early as May. Plants are vine-like and trailing, so give them a trellis or support to keep the canes up and make picking easier.
